Karla Alexander |
Quilt designer and author, Karla Alexander lives in beautiful Salem OR, and is the author of Stack the Deck! Crazy Quilts in 4 Easy Steps! She was a featured artist on Simply Quilts with Alex Anderson in July of 2002. In addition to her books, she has released her own line of patterns under the name Saginaw Street Quilt Company. She has been a featured teacher at many quilt retreats and has taught thousands of students how to quilt using a variety of methods including her own stack methods. Karla's philosophy regarding quilting is to enjoy the process, learn from your experience and take what you learn from one project on to the next. As a teacher she enthusiastically inspires her students to discover and create their own individual style in their quilt making journeys. With all the many things to worry about, she believes quilting isn't one of them, but rather a time to experience the "creative flow" & enjoy. |
| Joe Cunningham | Joe "the quilter" Cunningham was born and raised in Flint, Michigan and learned to quilt in the 1980s when he and Gwen Marston built a house with a quilting studio on Beaver Island in Lake Michigan. They worked together through the 1980s producing over 150 quilts, dozens of magazine articles, eight books and a series of videos. He moved to San Francisco in 1994 to write promotional material for the Quilt Complex, married and became a father. His studio is in the basement of his son's school. His quilts use traditional quilting designs done freehand without any markings, but his colors and shapes are often more abstract. He makes quilts on commission, writes extensively on quilting and lectures all over the country. He has appeared with Alex Anderson on "Simply Quilts" and "The Quilt Show" with Ricky Tims and Alex. An accomplished guitarist, singer and songwriter, Joe has also found a way to weave quilting into his music. |
| Nancy Eha | A contemporary quilt artist who uses beads as an important design element best describes Nancy Eha. She has authored two books dealing with the creative process and beading as well as numerous articles in US and international magazines and books. Embellishing quilts with colorful beads has kept her stimulated for over fourteen years. Nancy lives just minutes east of Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota in the historic town of Stillwater. |
| Cristy Fincher | Genetics? Maybe. Cristy is the daughter of Sharon Schamber and seems to have inherited Sharon's love of fabric and sewing. She grew up watching her mom sew and was the recipient of many "princess dresses". All grown up now, she has been an elementary school teacher and mom and most recently co-authored "Piece by Piece" with Sharon. She teaches piec-liqué, paperless paper piecing and Sharon's unique method of appliqué. In addition she is owner of Purple Daisies where you can order hand-dyed fabrics, patterns, CDs, and notions needed to create beautiful appliqué quilts. Cristy lives in Tempe, AZ with husband Clay, son Aaron and daughter Molly. |
John Flynn |
John Flynn is a prize-winning quilter, author, designer and inventor of the no-baste machine quilting system, the Flynn Multi-Frame. He makes his home in Billings, Montana. With over twenty years of experience leading quilt workshops coupled with his engineering background, John brings a unique blend of skills to the classroom. John offers classes which not only teach a project but give students an opportunity to improve their piecing and quilting skills with his low key one-on-one guidance. He is always challenging himself to make piecing and quilting techniques faster, easier and more accurate for his students. |
Harriet Hargrave |
Harriet is the "fairy godmother" of machine quilting. When she first introduced free motion quilting in 1984 at Houston Quilt Market, it set the quilting world on it's ear, and has been changing the look of quilting ever since. Her first book, Heirloom Machine Quilting, is in its fourth edition with over 280,000 copies sold. In her books and in her classes, Harriet teaches her unique methods of machine quilting and appliqué that let quilters make extraordinary heirlooms with the easiest possible techniques. |
| Deb Karasik | Deb's infectious enthusiasm, warm smile and easy going teaching style are just some of the attributes that have earned her a large following of students. Knowing that paper piecing, setting curve and perfect spikey quilts, challenge some students, she's made it a personal goal to not only see to it that all of her students understand the process, but actually end up enjoying it! Relatively new to quilting, Deb has only been actively quilting since the fall of 2000, when her daughter told her she was pregnant with triplets! In this relatively short time, Deb has gone from a beginner to a quilt designer, an accomplished author, teacher and award winning quilter. She is currently finishing up her second book for AQS. |
Billie Lauder |
Billie is proud to be a third generation quiltmaker. She has been teaching quilting since 1976. When asked what quiltmaking meant to her, Billie said “It is the past, the present, and the future.” Billie has a knack for making quiltmaking easy for all levels of quilters. She loves to develop “Quick Trick” methods of quilt construction. Writing and designing books has been a great challenge for Billie. With 21 books published by Easymade Publication over the last several years, Billie has a vast library to draw upon for her workshops and lectures. The HGTV show “Simply Quilts” helped Billie launch her lecture tour, which continues to take her all over the world. |
| Cindy Needham | Cindy lives in Chico, CA but was first exposed to quilts while living in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina and Virginia. She has been obsessed every since. With 35 years of quilting experience she is delighted to be able to pass along her passion through teaching. Another passion is vintage linens. What better way to combine the two passions than embellish the linens with machine quilting. This is a whole new concept for quilters. Her new book "Wholecloth Linen Quilts" was published by the American Quilter's Society. Cindy represents Superior Threads nationally as one of three National Educators and also designs stencils for Quilting Creations as well as whole-cloth tissue paper patterns for Golden Threads. A very talented lady indeed. |
| Martha Nordstrand | Martha has been quilting off and on for over 50 years, but seriously for the last 16. She loves flowers and gardening which is a challenge in the desert, so her flowers end up being fabric. She came to Arizona via California and way back when, the South, where she was born into a family of dedicated needleworkers. She has wandered through every style of appliqué and after much experimentation, created her own new way to prepare and apply appliqué pieces to the background fabric. She loves teaching and sharing this method with all levels of quiltmakers. She loves Arizona scenery, environment and weather and wakes up each morning with a new inspiration for another appliqué project. |
Sharon Schamber |
Sharon has a long history in textiles. She was designer and the master pattern maker for Deja Vu/Time & Eternity Fashions in Scottsdale, Arizona for over 20 years. After retiring from that business in 1994, she has devoted her energies to designing and making beautiful award winning quilts. One of her most recognizable works is Sitting Bull. Many of her works of art are painted with fabric paints as well as thread. She started like most of us with the wrong fabric, wrong needles and wrong batting. Learn what she has found brings success in all your quiltmaking projects. Sharon was named the winner of Best of Show award at the 2005 Houston International Quilt Festival with her magnificent quilt "Scarlet Serenade" and Best of Show 2006 and 2007 at Paducah with her "Sedona Rose" and "Flower of Life" quilts. She is the first quilter to win Best of Show two years in a row at Paducah. She also won the $100,000 Quilting Challenge. |
