Some info about camp...

We are very excited about the wonderful response to Quilt Camp in the Pines and are looking forward to the best experience ever! We know we are going to make new friends from across the country and see old friends from far and wide. And, so will you!

The following information will answer questions and help prepare you for your Quilt Camp in the Pines experience. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call us or contact us by e-mail.

Location: Camp will be held on the campus of Northern Arizona University which is located 2½ hours north of Phoenix in the city of Flagstaff. Flagstaff (population 48,000) is nestled at the base of the San Francisco Peaks at an elevation of 7,000 feet. Access to Flagstaff includes I-17 and I-40, Amtrak trains and air and bus lines.

Summers are beautiful in Flagstaff. Temperatures during the day are a pleasant 75 to 85 degrees (but have been known to be warmer) and at night can dip into the 40s. A light jacket is recommended. Also, in July, afternoon rain showers are common. You'll probably want a sweatshirt (you can always pre-order a QCIP sweatshirt) or sweater as it turns quite cool during the showers. Bring an umbrella...then for sure it won't rain!

Surrounding Flagstaff are many attractions, which include: Oak Creek Canyon (20 minutes), Sedona (40 minutes), the Grand Canyon (1½ hours), Meteor Crater (30 minutes), the Painted Desert (1 hour), and the Petrified Forest (1½ hours). Some local sights include Lake Mary, Walnut Canyon, Lowell Observatory and the Museum of Northern Arizona.

Registration and Parking: Parking is available on campus for Quilt Camp participants for $10 for the week for a car (motorhomes and exceptionally large vans are $20.00 per day with overnight parking not allowed).  Permits are required for all cars parked on the campus during weekdays... even if you are only attending classes. They are not necessary for those attending the evening events.  They are not  necessary for weekends.  Parking permits must be ordered in advance and will be issued upon check-in. When you arrive, drive up to the front entrance of Mt. View Hall and, if there is room, proceed to the check-in area where you will receive your parking permit. Do not park in the restricted area and risk getting a ticket. After registering, you will be directed to move your car to the dorm parking lot. There will be much easier access to the rooms and, if you need help, we have someone available.  Registration Desk is at Mountain View Hall and open from 8 am till 5 pm daily.

Housing: We will be housed in Mt. View Hall in suite-style facilities. These have two double occupancy rooms which have bathroom facilities exclusive to the suite and not shared with other suites. The rooms are equipped with telephone lines but if you wish to use a phone, bring one to plug in. All local calls are free. Long distance calls must be collect or charged to your calling card. If you wish to receive calls during your stay, the person calling should contact the Mt. View desk at (928) 523-1555, and the staff will give them your phone number or take the proper messages. Campers will receive full linen service. This includes two sheets, one blanket, one pillow and pillowcase, and one washcloth and towel. (If you want another towel or one for the floor, please bring one along.) Also, a shower caddy might be handy as well as a light to clip on your headboard if you want to read yourself to sleep. You might also want to bring a fan as the rooms can be warm after being closed up all day. And, of course, no matter how cool or warm you will probably want a quilt for your bed (a good way to show off!) You probably won't need an alarm clock (this is, of course, camp!) But you might want a small clock for your room that makes noise...just in case you don't want to miss your class.

Many people have allergies to scents. Please be considerate of your suite-mates, class-mates and teachers by not using perfumes, scented body lotions and scented hair sprays. Quilt camp in the Pines is proud of their scent-free environment.  Also, Flagstaff has an ordinance forbidding any smoking in public buildings (we are at the University, so we are considered public!) And this includes the living quarters. There will be special smoking areas outside of the building but there is no smoking in the rooms. We want to make everyone's camping experience the best and appreciate your thoughtfulness and cooperation. Thanks!

For those of you who have a long way to travel to home, airports, etc., we have rooms available for Saturday night. If you are staying for the Banquet Dinner, you might want to spend the night and get a fresh start on Sunday morning. (Would you want to miss any fun?) If you are interested in staying Saturday night, let us know as soon as you can.

Classes: Most of the classes will be held in Mt.View Hall and the University Union and the evening programs will either be held in Mt. View Hall, Ashurst Hall in Old Main or Cline Library Auditorium.  It is possible that you might need transportation to one of the locations... and we will arrange it for you...just ask at our QCIP registration desk. If you are a non-resident camper, please check our class location at the registration desk before bringing all of your quilting supplies and machine into the dorm. If you are a resident camper, please note that we don't recommend leaving supplies in your car overnight. All kit fees (as stated in the registration form) will be paid to the teachers. Some teachers will offer an optional kit along with their supply list and this also is paid to the teachers. Please do not send the fee to us.

Don't forget your sewing machine and an extension cord and a surge protector. If you are working with a borrowed machine, please try a trial run at home before coming to class. Try to have a few extra bobbins wound and know how to wind more. We believe the light in the classrooms to be good but, if you need additional brightness, please bring along a clip light. You might also want to have a luggage carrier to carry your machine and the bundles, baskets, bags, etc., of stuff!!! The classrooms will be locked at night so you may leave your things in the rooms. In case you are flying in and don't want to bring your sewing machine, there is a local store (Odegaard's Sewing Center - (928) 774-2331 - that has a limited number of new Bernina Sewing Machines available for rental and sale. It's definitely first come, first served. You will need to make all of the arrangements with them. If you do plan to fly with your machine, please contact your air carrier in advance to see what arrangements might be necessary.

Camp Supply Store: Once again we will have our own special Camp Supply Store. They will be able to assist you with your emergency needs and not so emergency needs. Check at the registration table for the daily hours. Along with all those other necessities, there will be a few extra T-shirts and sweat-shirts available at the Registration Desk but, to insure having your own waiting for you, be sure to order ahead! We always have someone who is disappointed...don't let it be you!

Food: Most of our campers will eat in a cafeteria-style dining hall. Meal offerings consist of a main course as well as salad, beverage and dessert bar. If you are on a special diet, please let us know. There is usually a vegetarian entree and cereals are always available. There is always a salad bar at lunch and at dinner. Upon check-in, resident campers will be issued a meal card. This card will be valid only in the dining hall. If you wish, non-resident campers are welcome to pay cash for all meals in the dining halls.

Medical Assistance: In case of emergencies, campers may use the Fronske Health Center on campus. The health center is an outpatient facility staffed by full-time physicians. Services offered include X-ray facilities and a full-service pharmacy. Please note that payment must be made at the time of treatment.

If you have any questions about anything...please, do not hesitate to contact us.

Silent Auction

We in Arizona are proud of our state's Native American heritage. Each year, Quilt Camp in the Pines is proud to host quilters from the Native American Community. The quilters like to come to Quilt Camp but it is difficult for them to arrange transportation from their remote mesas, find places to stay in Flagstaff and perhaps arrange for childcare while they are gone.  A fund has been established from which they can draw scholarship money, but it needs to be replenished each year.

In the past, generous quiltmakers coming to camp have donated small quilts for a Silent Auction to raise additional monies for this fund. If you would like to donate a small quilt (from miniature to 36" square), please bring your quilt when you check in at camp or feel free to send it to the camp address...that way, we can have signage prepared in advance. If you would prefer to make a cash donation, make checks payable to Native American Scholarship Fund and mail to Quilt Camp in the Pines. Thanks for helping with this scholarship fund. Quilters helping quilters is what it's all about.

Sewing Machine Rentals

Students must provide their own machines, surge protector and extension cords for classes requiring machines. A few machines are available to rent locally. Prior arrangements must be made. A light comes in handy too! To rent a machine, please contact Odegaards directly. (928) 774-2331 or from within AZ 1-800-360-2331
